Earn an Undergraduate Certificate in Substance Use Disorders. Coordinate with your advisor or the director of the SUD certificate in advance to ensure the courses will be available in your preferred graduation time frame.

Program Objectives

  • Preparation of students for employment in substance use disorder treatment settings
  • Increase students’ awareness and understanding of alcohol and substance misuse in society
  • Provide current information on alcohol and other drug abuse treatment and practice
  • Provide current information, knowledge and skills in working with individuals and families affected by substance misuse

Criteria

  • 12 Credit Hours before a student can apply
  • Students must have a 2.5 GPA
  • Students must get at least a C in all of the Certificate Courses

Course Requirements (15 credits)

* Students must earn a final grade of C or above in all required courses to ear the certificate.

Pathway to complete SUD Certificate for Social Work students:

  • SWK-332 Generalist Social Work Practice II: Theory and Skills II (3 cr.) (16 wk, Spring) (requires S331 as pre-req) – in person
  • SWK-S202 Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling (3 cr.)        (16 wk, Fall or Spring) – online
  • SWK-S324 Social Systems of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (3 cr.) (2nd 8 weeks, Fall) (requires S202 as pre or co-req) – online
  • SWK-S 311 Theoretical Aspects of Alcohol and Drug Abuse: the Individual (3 cr.)      (1st 8 weeks, Spring) (requires S202 as pre or co-req) – online
  • SWK-S 403 Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Seminar (3 cr.) (2nd 8 weeks, Spring) (requires S202, S324, S311 as pre-req) – online

Pathway to complete SUD Certificate for non Social Work Students

  • SWK-S202 Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling (3 cr.) (16 wk, Fall or Spring) – online
  • SWK -S314 Basic Counseling Skills (3 cr.) (requires S202 as pre-req) – in person
    • SWK-S314 will only be offered pending sufficient enrollment. In the event that the course is not offered for any particular semester, alternative course which would also meet this requirement include:
      • PSY-B 386 Introduction to Counseling (3 cr.) P: PSY-B 110 or equivalent, PSY-B 310, and PSY-B 380.
      • Or another analogous undergraduate basic counseling course, pending the undergraduate substance use disorder certificate director's approval.
